i dont think you’d ever really know. animals are going to be slaughtered for food whether you eat them or not. but if there is an exact number, i want to know too!

You save none. The meateaters of the world (like myself) just eat the ones that you save.

not that many. the animals you would be eating are just in the store going bad, or being bought by someone else. your not stopping them from being killed. sorry to burst your animal loving bubble.

It would all depend on how many vegetarians there are and I don’t think anyone has ever determined that.

none a lot of then still eat margarine which contains pig fat…..something that I find amusing to watch when vegetarians are standing there preaching about why we shouldn’t eat meat.

a vegetarian saves more than 100 animals a year

well the average american eats about 30 cows 100 chickens and 50 pigs a year so i guess you save 180 animals

    Go to Peta’s website!

At the bottom of the page, it gives a figure. It says ”*** animals were saved by vegetarians today alone”

    Its fascinating :-)

EDIT: its usually in the region of 15 million per day

I would say non. Vegeterians who drink milk actually cause some animals to die. Nobody wants male cows, they can’t produce milk and people don’t even wat to eat them (almost all beef is that of a female cow). People who have a view on the beef industry believe that males cows, or veal, is treated badly, so they don’t want to contribute to the industry But, do they think male cows simply stop being born? The answer is no, if you drink milk or eat cheese then you are contributing to the cruel handling or shooting on birth of male calves.

Edit: Other than the veal issue, not eating meat just means that farmers breed fewer animals, so you don’t save lives, you just cause fewer animals to be born in the first place.

I think any thumbs down on these answers that don’t give you an answer you were hoping for are the result of denial, because they can’t be based on evidence to the contrary of what we are saying because no one has provided any. Cattle are bred to be killed, so if they are born, they WILL be killed. Vegeterians do not save any lives, they prevent birth. There is never any cattle that dies of old age, it would simply be too costly to keep them alive, animals are taken to slaughter before the middle of their natural life.

I think there is despute over what you mean by ‘saving a life’. To me, saving a life means saving the life of an animal that has already been born. Saving a life is not saviour from suffering. The majority of farmers in the UK (the legal farmers) treat their cattle in the nicest possible way, and the slaughter is fast, the animal has been turned into food and packaged before it even knows where it is. There is no suffering involved. I understand vegeterians who live on mainland europe or the US because the care for the cattle is not at such a high standard due to the law on handling cattle, but a vegeterian in the UK who is a vegetarian in order to avoid animals suffering does not make sense, as long as they buy British meat. If the whole world turned vegan then all the breeds of cattle would become extinct.

Oh brother. Isn’t it enough to know you’re doing your part? The numbers should be meaningless. It’s about the good you are doing, not statistics. It’s not just about saving animals either. It’s also about saving the environment. Do you have any idea how much land is used to raise just one cow for slaughter? That land could be put to much better use, growing vegetables, helping the poor, building affordable housing, hospitals, etc. I might point out that I’m not a vegetarian, but respect anyone’s choice whether it’s to eat meat or not. I don’t eat beef (or veal).

  • Joe J says:

    save

none, the farm industry raises just enough to meet the demand. so it’s more like, how many were not born. so i guess maybe you’ve prevented maybe, what, 35 chickens, and a cow from being raised….now see, if you’re body was getting the nutrition it needs, you would have known that…psst…those cows in the pasture…they are not wild.

it depends how much meat a person normally eats if they werent vegetarians.but idk….good question though.

Vegetarians prevent over 100 animals from being bred and slaughtered for food every year. That’s a lot of animals in a lifetime!

  • Miss Scarlett says:

According to one book I read this past week (Skinny B1tch. I highly recommend it. It will make you think twice about ever putting an animal product in your body.), about 90 animals per year. What I want to know is, how much meat does the average meat eater consume? I’m not a veggie (aspiring veggie is what I like to call myself) and I eat MAYBE one serving of meat per week. That’s it. Those numbers are frightening!

    None…

You NOT eating animals help animals about as much as me eating animals helps save carrots.

Sorry to break it to you…

Reality is usually hard to swallow.

Each year 50 billion animals are slaughtered for food around the world – to feed 6 billion people. Just do the math…. it doesn’t seem fair or just to me.

By switching to a vegetarian diet, you will save more than 100 animals a year.

  • bebz says:

emm not sure but the more vegetarians there are in the world the less animals there will be being slaughtered i myself am a vegetarian(trying to go vegan) according to the book “skinny bitch” a vegan saves around 90 animals a year.

  • may says:

    save

Like people said above, you’re not actually saving animals’ lives because farmers only breed as many as they need, so you just save some additional animals from being born.
I think vegetarianism makes a good statement about the terrible means and condition of edible meat production in this country. It’s not really about saving lives (I mean… they’re not going to let any of the cows off the hook!), it’s more about exposing the terrible conditions of a terrible industry.
So, in a way, you can make just as much of a statement by buying cage-free eggs, chicken, etc. No offense, vegetarians! Both are great things to do.

It seems that different sources have differing opinions on how many animals are “saved” each year by have a vegetarian or vegan lifestyles.

    I.E 42

    I.E. 93

I.E. 35 (only mammals and birds)

    I.E. Over 100

Some have postulated that none are saved because the meat eater will just consume the extra or that certain animals will not be born. Well it may be true to a certain extent that some of the extra meat will be consumed or go to waste. I believe however that less meat will hence be produced in the future as less finances and and a notable decrease in demand will have its intended affect.

Another thing I can save is that by having a vegetarian or vegan attitude one is less likely to kill or have killed an animal that for consumption through personally raising, fishing, and or hunting. It is not just the industry that we are affecting but everything that surrounds us.

One thing needs to be understood for certain is the amount of overall suffering is decreased by living such lifestyles. Don’t let the imps of doubt try to tell you otherwise.

Continue to listen to your conscience and not only will you help to create a happier world, but that happiness will reflect back and shine upon you in ways you would have never imaged otherwise if you had not chosen to take this most noble path.

    Many Blessings : )

These meat eaters just don’t understand supply and demand.
Not buying a product reduces sales and thus production of that product, in this case meat.

So it saves plenty of suffering, and personally I’d rather not be born than endure such a high level of abuse.

  • cows_look_fake says:

    save

None. You have to take into consideration the animals that are killed in the farming of your food, the transport of that food, that are killed because of the road your food is transported on, that is displaced by the farms that grow your food, that are displaced because of the need for you to have a home, that are killed in any of the steps that lead up the manufacturing of the animal byproduct alternatives you use, that were killed in the steps that lead up to the manufacturing of any item you use in your life, etc… Just because you don’t eat animals doesn’t mean animals haven’t died so you can live.

The only animals you can say you save are the animals you yourself take away from an impending death and you keep a watch on them until they die of natural causes. How many is that that you’ve done that for?

  • exsft says:

    Caffeinated Content

You mean animals that are saved from slaughter because you don’t eat meat?

    Zero as in none.

Vegetarians comprise only about 2% of the popultion .The animal industry will not “save” one animal because somebnody is a vegetarian. Fact is, the animal industry is bigger than ever with higher demand locally and abroad. US beef is in very high demand in Asia and elswhere. And with the dollar weakening against foreign currencies, US goods including beef, turkey and lamb, are actually cheaper and more affordable than before.

The “I am saving 100 animals a year” is a “feel good” myth propagted by anti-meat, pro-vegetarian groups. However, tha shoudn’t deter you from the act of NOT CONTRIBUTING to the meat industry. If you believe in that ,then that’s what you should do

  • Elena B says:

Just think supply and demand, the more people who are not buying and consuming meat, the less will be slaughtered and sold.
You are making a difference, maybe not a big one, but you are contributing. If everyone thought that by going veg the wouldn’t save anything, we wouldn’t get anywhere

    Dear Lyla

Even when you save a single life, it is a BIG thing in the eyes of god and he considers it. If we do not eat animals, it is not that we are doing so for saving other animals, but for maintaining the order of god. Meat eaters are not what a human was designed to be.
Now start counting how many you save by not eating a chicken. One chicken grows up and breeds, then its offspring and so on. Count how many will be there in 80 years (average human life).
Another fact for you, there are HUNDREDS OF HEALTH DISORDERS THAT ONLY A MEAT EATER IS PRONE TO HAVE. Save yourself and count this also.
